Seyi Vibez Headlines Mainland’s Grand Turnup Affair In Lagos

Channels TV about 1 hour 3 mins read

Nigerian singer Seyi Vibez brought his latest musical era to life on Thursday night as he headlined the Grand Turnup Affair GTA, an Independence Day Special organised by Mainland Block Party in Lagos.

The event, held at Sol Beach, Elegushi Private Beach, stretched from Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, October 2, drawing music lovers to the beach for the celebration built around music, nightlife and street-pop culture.

The organisers had billed the event as a major crew turn-up, with the night combining the Independence Day celebration with the momentum surrounding Seyi Vibez’s latest project, SWAGUU.

Despite the late turnout at the venue and the initially tense atmosphere, the audience gradually found their vibe, singing along to the music bit by bit as Seyi Vibez performed into the late night.

The 26-year-old star kept the crowd engaged throughout his set, dressed in a red jacket, red shoes, and three-quarter black jeans, paired with his dreadlocks.

The singer performed several songs from the project and his recent catalogue, including “GTA” and “Dejavu”, while other SWAGUU tracks featured prominently during his set.

Peruzzi, Shoday, Muyeez, and Terry Apala also performed on stage for the night.

DJs and supporting entertainment helped sustain the atmosphere before and around Seyi Vibez’s headline appearance, while the crowd’s strongest reactions came during the singer’s performance.

“GTA”, the song after which the event was named, was one of the major highlights of the performance, with fans singing along as Seyi Vibez delivered the track on stage.

The Headies Award winner for Best Street-Hop Artiste performed at a time when songs from his 14-track SWAGUU album were dominating the Nigerian music charts.

Released in August, “GTA” also marked the beginning of the current SWAGUU era, with the song drawing on the imagery of the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise while addressing ambition, survival, street life and the pursuit of wealth.

At Sol Beach, the performance translated the songs from streaming platforms to a live audience, with fans responding to the singer’s energetic delivery and joining in on some of his most recognisable lines.

Unlike some of Mainland Block Party’s larger editions staged at venues, Thursday’s event had a more intimate beach-party setting.

The open-air venue, combined with the Independence Day holiday and the late-night schedule, gave the event a distinctly nightlife-driven atmosphere, with guests turning up in groups and dancing through the night. The organisers had promoted GTA around the idea of a “grand turn up”.

Earlier this year, the singer headlined the May Day edition of the event at the Police College in Ikeja, where he performed to a large crowd alongside artistes including Small Doctor, Shoday, Muyeez, Kayode and Boy Muller.
