Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has met Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan, who is seeking to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.
The meeting took place shortly before Shettima returned to Nigeria.

Shettima said Nigeria’s position on candidates for the UN’s top job would be based on equity, justice and fairness.
He added that Nigeria would support a candidate who would promote Africa’s interests globally, including the continent’s call for stronger representation in major international institutions and improved multilateral cooperation.
The Vice President said he would recommend Grynspan’s candidature based on factors including Nigeria’s relationship with Latin America and the importance of gender inclusion.
“Thank you for seeking Nigeria’s perspective for your candidature for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Nigeria and Costa Rica share a common historical background connecting both countries and their regions,” Shettima wrote.
