Modou Kante, a half back for Second Division League side Sibanor United, died over the weekend while playing a football match across the border in Casamance, Senegal. It is not immediately clear how the incident happened but sources in Foni said it is not uncommon for footballers from the area to play Nawettan in Casamance which is just a short distance across the border.
The Gambia Football Federation GFF said Kante was talented and dependable left-back, who was an integral part of Sibanor United’s campaign in the just-concluded GFF Second Division League. “His commitment, work rate, and sportsmanship on and off the pitch earned him immense respect from teammates, opponents, and fans alike,” the GFF statement said in tributes to the deceased.
GFF president Lamin Kaba Bajo extended condolences to the management, technical staff, players, and supporters of Sibanor United, as well as Modou’s bereaved family and friends.
