Singapore has introduced a major new financial support package that could see every eligible Singaporean child receive nearly S$70,000 (about ₦94 million) in government benefits from birth through age 17.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the new S$62,000 SG Child Support Package during his National Day Rally speech on August 23. He said the government wants to rethink the way families are supported, rather than simply making small adjustments to existing schemes.
Under the new package, families will receive a S$10,000 cash Baby Gift, S$32,000 in Child Credits, a S$5,000 Child Development Account (CDA) grant, up to S$5,000 in government CDA co-matching, and a S$10,000 top-up to the child’s Post-Secondary Education Account.
When existing benefits are added, including the S$5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and annual Edusave contributions, total government support could reach around S$70,000 per child. This represents a significant increase from the current support of between S$27,500 and S$56,500, depending on the child’s birth order.
Wong said the government also wants to make the system easier for parents to understand. Rather than having families navigate several different schemes, the new approach will provide more consistent support from birth through a child’s teenage years.
The S$10,000 Baby Gift will be paid in two instalments during the child’s first year, while the S$32,000 Child Credits will provide S$2,000 every year from age one until the child turns 16. At age 17, the government will provide another S$10,000 to the child’s education account.
The measures are expected to benefit more than 610,000 children across about 380,000 households.
The announcement comes as Singapore continues to grapple with a declining birth rate and seeks new ways to make raising children more manageable for families.
Wong said the government is prepared to commit significant resources because supporting families and ensuring Singaporeans are cared for throughout every stage of life remains a major national priority.
