The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, which coincides with 12th Rabiul Awwal 1448 (A.H) as a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Maulud celebration. It also called on Muslims and other Nigerians to pray for peace, progress and unity of the nation.
Here are six things you should know about Eid-ul-Maulud:
Eid-ul-Maulud or Maulud Nabiyy is celebrated annually on the 12th day of Rabiul Awwal, the third month of the Hijri Calendar. The exact Gregorian date for this celebration changes every year.
The celebration commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the Holy city of Makkah. The day is meant to honour the Prophet who muslims believe is the seal of all Prophets Allah sent to guide mankind.
Maulud is observed differently across countries and communities. In some places there are large public gatherings, processions, and cultural events; in others the day is quieter and focused on prayer and teachings of the prophet.
The celebration is an opportunity for muslims to reflect on the life of the prophet, his teachings, kindness, compassion and role as a guide to mankind.
The celebration of Eid-el-Maulud is subject to different opinions among Muslims. Some believe that it is the best way to honour the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), while others believe that Eid-ul-Maulud is an innovation in Islam that should not be marked.
Islamic schools and religious organisations host educational events to deepen understanding of the Prophet’s life and message. These programmes are aimed at fostering peace and harmony.
