The President-General of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, has alleged that some individuals are deliberately sponsoring banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in a bid to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Kawas made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, where he also defended the bishops’ recent decision to endorse Tinubu for a second term in office.
Addressing claims that the endorsement may have been financially motivated, the cleric insisted that the bishops did not receive any payment or financial reward for supporting the President.
According to him, the decision was based on what the bishops described as the current realities in the country, particularly the security challenges confronting the administration.
“This endorsement has not given us any one naira. No one naira has been given to us. We did it because, based on current happenings in our nation, [there is] sabotage by people sponsoring banditry and kidnapping and all these things just to give Tinubu a bad name,” Kawas said.
The archbishop further drew a comparison with the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming that similar attempts were allegedly made in the past to portray a sitting government in a negative light.
He maintained that the bishops believe insecurity is being exploited by certain interests to frustrate and undermine Tinubu’s government.
Kawas also claimed that, based on what he described as international intelligence, some individuals are allegedly behind the sponsorship of banditry and terrorism with the intention of damaging the President’s reputation and weakening his administration.
He said the bishops therefore decided to support Tinubu because, in their assessment, the President remains the right candidate to lead the country.
