Former Senator Shehu Sani has raised concerns over the South-East’s low voter registration figures, describing the situation as a serious political issue for the region.
Sani made the observation in a post on his X platform on Saturday, questioning whether the figures reflected voter registration in other states or inadequate mobilisation and public enlightenment across the region.
“The South-East has the lowest number of registered voters in the country. This is a serious political issue for the region,” he wrote.
He added: “The problem is either that many people from the region decided to register and vote in other states or there was no mobilisation and enlightenment on the need for people to register.”
Comparing voter registration with literacy levels across the country, the former senator noted that the North-West had the lowest literacy rate but the highest number of registered voters.
“The North-West is the lowest in literacy rate and the highest in voter registration. A thought for political scientists,” he said.
Sani’s comments come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The South-East is the home region of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), who hails from Anambra State.
