SSANU faults Sokoto varsity VC over claims of irregular strike

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Sokoto State University branch, has accused the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor M.B. Yerima, of giving a misleading account of the circumstances surrounding its five-day warning strike.

The branch chairman, Ismail Bala Muhammad, said the union embarked on the strike after several unsuccessful attempts to resolve disputes over members’ unpaid entitlements with the university management and the Sokoto State Government.

Muhammad made this known in a statement issued on Friday in Sokoto while responding to the Vice-Chancellor’s claim that the union failed to follow due process before commencing the industrial action.

He explained that the union first submitted its demands to the university management, prompting the Vice-Chancellor to constitute a committee to examine the complaints.

He said the verified demands were subsequently forwarded to the state government through the Ministry for Higher Education, followed by several meetings to address the issues.

According to him, the union later issued a 14-day ultimatum after the discussions failed to produce a resolution.

Muhammad maintained that the strike was approved by members at a congress and was not politically motivated or intended to undermine the university’s administration.

SSANU members began the five-day warning strike on November 2, 2026, over unpaid entitlements and other welfare-related demands.
