Parents, teachers and old students have reiterated the need for affordable and quality education, saying the coming of private schools is helping the government to fulfil the obligation of ensuring the right to education of the citizens.

They spoke in Lagos on Tuesday during a press briefing to announce the celebration of the 40th anniversary of M.D School.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Omolara Adedugbe, an Executive Director of M.D School, charged the government to lessen the burden of multiple taxes on school owners, saying their contributions to the education sector could not be quantified.

“Private schools are helping to implement the policies of the government. They are partners in the education sector. The government needs to encourage them and come up with policies that would make life easy for them. Multiple taxes coming from all tiers of government and being imposed on private schools should stop,” she said.

Adedugbe added that M.D School has contributed immensely to the development of education in the past 40 years and that the affordability of the fees is because setting it up was interest driven and nothing more.

The Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr Chris Dike, said there were enough reasons for the school to celebrate and to thank God for the support being enjoyed.

“We will have a thanksgiving service, medical and food outreach, award ceremony for our staff members and others, Alumni Homecoming Day, a gala night being organised by the Parent Teacher Association, corporate social responsibility day among others.”

We have reasons to celebrate and appreciate people. Our students are doing well across the globe, “ he stated.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Mrs Oyenike Adeosun, whose speech was delivered by Steve Akadiri, paid special tributes to the visionaries whose foresight laid the foundation upon which the school was built.

“Indeed, this celebration is first and foremost an occasion to say “Thank you” to everyone who has walked this remarkable journey with us. As we celebrate our past with pride, we are equally committed to embracing the future with renewed purpose and determination.

“The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and education  must continue to evolve to meet emerging realities. Today, our responsibility extends beyond academic instruction. We are committed to preparing our students to become critical thinkers, innovators, ethical leaders, responsible citizens and compassionate contributors to the society,” she said.

The school which started in Agidingbi, Ikeja in 1986, now has campuses across Lagos State.
