The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to take an active role in shaping the national conversation on the proposed establishment of State Police through informed engagement, objective analysis and public enlightenment.
Disu gave the charge on Thursday at a one-day workshop on State Police organised by the Nigeria Police Institute at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, Abuja.
The IGP described the workshop as a timely platform for critical reflection on one of Nigeria’s most significant security policy debates, stressing the need for police personnel to be well-informed as discussions on the proposed reform continue across the country.
He said, “As discussions on the creation of State Police continue to gain momentum across the country, members of the Nigeria Police Force must remain well-informed and contribute constructively to the ongoing discourse.
“The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to examine the implications of State Police, raise pertinent questions, address legitimate concerns and make meaningful contributions that would enrich national policy discussions on policing and internal security.”
Disu urged participants to engage actively and objectively during the deliberations, stressing that the knowledge acquired should extend beyond the workshop.
He charged the officers to return to their respective commands and formations to share the knowledge gained with colleagues, noting that such engagement would promote better understanding of State Police, dispel misconceptions and reduce concerns often associated with major institutional reforms.
The IGP emphasised that informed dialogue and continuous professional engagement were essential to preparing officers for possible changes in Nigeria’s policing architecture.
He commended the Nigeria Police Institute for organising the workshop, expressing confidence that the discussions would contribute meaningfully to the ongoing national conversation on policing reforms.
Disu reaffirmed his commitment to building a professional, informed and forward-looking police force capable of enhancing national security and public safety.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the Nigeria Police Institute, Prof. Olu Ogunshakin, commended the IGP for constituting the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police.
Ogunshakin noted that several recommendations of the committee had been reflected in the proposed State Police framework, describing its work as a significant contribution to the ongoing policing reform process.
He said the workshop was part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to prepare personnel for emerging policing reforms while sustaining professionalism, operational effectiveness and public confidence in law enforcement.
