Super Eagles: Blackburn Rovers striker chooses Nigeria over England

Daily Post 5 minutes 2 mins read

Blackburn Rovers forward, Dapo Afolayan, has disclosed that playing for Nigeria remains one of his foremost aspirations, acknowledging that he came close to receiving a call-up to the Super Eagles previously.

Afolayan demonstrated exceptional form before the September/October international break, making four goals contributions in his final two Championship appearances.

His outstanding performances have attracted considerable attention, resulting in a nomination for the Championship Player of the Month award.

Bristol City fullback Rio Cardines, Millwall striker Lyndon Dykes, and West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos are likewise competing for this recognition.

Afolayan visited the Super Eagles at their team hotel during the 2025 Unity Cup in London, where he engaged with players and coaching personnel, thereby reinforcing his connection with the national team organization.

The former St. Pauli player was questioned regarding what would fulfill his football career and what his primary objective entails.

He communicated to Blackburn’s YouTube channel, “I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to represent Nigeria. This has consistently been an aspiration since my childhood. I have come remarkably close on several occasions, though circumstances have proven unfavorable.

“During my time in the Bundesliga, I was performing exceptionally well and approached a call-up opportunity; however, my playing time ceased before the March break, which resulted in my non-selection. These circumstances have simply not materialized as desired.”

Originally from London, Afolayan previously represented England’s C team, a squad composed of non-league athletes, though he maintains eligibility to play for Nigeria.
