SuperSport Swahili launches, bringing live Premier League football to East Africa in Kiswahili

Watchdog Uganda about 2 hours 4 mins read

MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, is proud to announce the new SuperSport channel, SuperSport Swahili, a 24-hour sports channel in Kiswahili for fans in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, which went live on 5th November on DStv channel 216.

SuperSport Swahili is the headline sport addition to DStv’s new packages in its Expect More campaign, which has launched in all three markets on the same day. The channel brings a selection of live Premier League matches to East African fans in Kiswahili.

SuperSport Swahili is available on DStv Sports and Ultimate packages in Uganda. GOtv customers can watch on channel 370 on the Sports package. The channel is also available on the DStv App.

SuperSport has delivered Kiswahili commentary on some of football’s biggest events, from the FIFA World Cup to the Africa Cup of Nations. Now, SuperSport Swahili takes that experience even further with a dedicated channel featuring its own presenters, studio shows and weekly programming.

What’s on

At launch, the channel will show a selection of live Premier League matches, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches, and a number of matches across LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1. Selected FA Cup and Carabao Cup ties, international football including AFCON qualifiers, and Diamond League athletics and marathons complete the live line-up. Matches are chosen each week from SuperSport’s array of sports properties, so the channel will carry a selection from various competitions.

The channel will also feature live studio presentations on selected games. Outside live football, the schedule includes WWE Raw, SmackDown and UFC, voiced in Kiswahili for delayed broadcast, plus Premier League Stories and The Big Interview dubbed into Kiswahili, along with highlights and repeats.

The voices

The launch line-up is led by presenters Ahmed Abdallah, Geoffrey Lea and George Embangile, with commentators Ibrahim Masoud, Ansibert Mwombeki, Wilson Upete, Edgar Kibwana, Jemedari Kazumari and Aboubakar Liongo.

Rendani Ramovha, CANAL+ Senior Vice-President of Sport Content for English- and Portuguese-speaking Africa says, “Localisation is a key part of our content strategy, bringing the sport that matters most to people in Africa, in a language that resonates with them. SuperSport Swahili isn’t merely about offering sport in a local East African language; we’ve done that for years. It’s about bringing the cultural feel and building an authentic affinity between us and our viewers.

“African football is about the full experience. It’s about the rivalries, the clash of giants and the spectacular vibe, and now our subscribers in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will get to live it in Kiswahili. With CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027 coming up, where Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are co-hosts, the continent has never been better placed to tell its story in our own languages,” he added.

SuperSport Swahili presenter Abdallah added: “Kiswahili is the language of the football conversation in East Africa. Now we have a channel that gives that passion a home of its own, with live matches, studio shows and voices that fans know. We can’t wait to welcome everyone on Thursday for the first kick-off.”

Launch week

The channel opened on Thursday, 5 November, with UEFA Europa League action: Crystal Palace v Hoffenheim at 20:45 EAT. The first weekend of live action includes Arsenal v Hull City on Saturday, 7 November at 18:00 EAT, and the LaLiga fixture between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona on Sunday, 8 November at 23:00 EAT. AFCON qualifiers featuring Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya follow from Friday, 13 November. All fixtures are subject to change.

A weekly Kiswahili magazine show, Saa Ya Michezo (The Sports Hour), is planned for early 2027, alongside regional documentaries and a SuperSport Swahili news section online.
