Police in Banjul yesterday morning arrested a man in connection with the death of Isatou Elizabeth Mendy, 34, following an alleged assault at Oxford Junction on Monday night.

According to preliminary information shared by the police, the incident occurred at approximately 10pm on Monday during an altercation at Oxford Junction.

“Mendy reportedly collapsed following an alleged assault and was rushed to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Following the incident, the police launched efforts to identify and apprehend the alleged suspect,” a police statement said.

Police spokesman Modou Musa Sisawo, further explained that the suspect, identified as Ousman Kone, was subsequently arrested by the Joint Security Night Patrol Team at Arch 22 in Banjul, and is currently in police custody, assisting investigators with the ongoing inquiry.

The police however did not disclose any further details about the circumstances surrounding the altercation or the cause of death beyond the preliminary information available.
