Suspected herders attack Niger community, farmer dies from injuries

Daily Post about 3 hours 2 mins read

A farmer, Yahaya Ibrahim, has died from injuries sustained during an attack by suspected Fulani herders in Baji Village, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.

Ibrahim reportedly died late Tuesday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Lambata, where he had been admitted after sustaining serious injuries during the attack.

Several other residents were also injured in the incident, with Ibrahim and two others, Rabiu Jibrin and Bashar Mohammed, receiving treatment at the hospital.

A villager, Mohammed Umaru, who confirmed Ibrahim’s death, said he died from a deep injury sustained during the attack.

Umaru described the death as a major blow to the community, alleging that residents had been subjected to repeated attacks without adequate intervention.

It was gathered that suspected herders had taken over farmlands belonging to 92 households in the community and destroyed their crops, leaving residents in serious hardship.

Following the alleged persistent attacks and destruction of their crops, the villagers reportedly confronted the herders in an attempt to stop further destruction.

During the confrontation, Ibrahim and other residents were allegedly attacked and injured.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, could not be reached for comment as calls to his phone went unanswered.
