The chairman of the Taraba State chapter of the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria (ALGON), Moses Maihankali, has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that councillors across the state are demanding money from newly appointed supervisory councillors ahead of their screening and confirmation.
In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, Maihankali described the claims as false, misleading, and capable of creating unnecessary tension within the local government system.
The chairman, who expressed concern over the spread of the allegations, urged members of the public to disregard the reports.
The ALGON chairman also warned the leadership of the Forum of Leaders of the Councils and all individuals involved in the screening process against collecting any form of payment or gratification from appointees under any guise.
According to him, the appointment and screening exercise must be conducted with transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to due process. He stressed that no appointee should be subjected to any financial demand before or during the screening process.
Maihankali further called on councillors across the 16 local government areas of Taraba State to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and continue to discharge their duties with dedication, integrity, and a high sense of responsibility.
He reiterated the commitment of local government councils in the state to promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance in line with the developmental agenda of the Taraba State Government.
The ALGON chairman assured the public that appropriate sanctions would be taken against any individual found engaging in activities capable of tarnishing the image of local councils and local government administration in the state.
