Taraba NLC urges workers to channel grievances through unions

Daily Post 10 minutes 3 mins read

The leadership of organised labour in Taraba State has urged workers with complaints or grievances to channel them through their respective affiliate unions for onward submission to the state councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) or the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for prompt attention and resolution.

The state chairman of the NLC, Peter Jediel, made the appeal on Monday, urging workers to follow established labour structures when addressing issues affecting their welfare and working conditions.

“The procedure would enable the labour leadership to receive, process and address workers’ complaints through appropriate channels, while strengthening coordination between the unions and the state councils,” Jediel said.

He also called on workers across the state to support Governor Agbu Kefas’s Moving Forward agenda, stressing the need for cooperation between the government and organised labour to consolidate existing achievements and lay a solid foundation for Taraba State’s future development.

The labour leader acknowledged the state government’s attention to workers’ welfare, noting that the governor had continued to respond to demands raised by organised labour.

According to him, the governor’s interventions include the approval of a N70,000 minimum wage, a commitment to paying outstanding gratuities owed to retired and deceased workers, and measures to improve the welfare of employees across different sectors of the state.

He identified the enrolment of local government staff and primary school teachers in relevant welfare arrangements, alongside the regular payment of monthly salaries, as some of the areas receiving attention from the state government.

Jediel said these measures were important to workers’ welfare and underscored the need for sustained engagement between the government and labour unions to address outstanding concerns affecting employees.

He, however, urged workers to remain committed to constructive dialogue and use the appropriate union channels whenever they had issues requiring the intervention of the labour leadership.

The NLC chairman’s appeal comes amid continuing concerns over workers’ welfare, including pension-related issues and the resolution of disputes affecting organised labour in the state.

He said the labour leadership remained committed to resolving the crisis, which has affected the leadership structure of the pensioners’ union in the state.

He reiterated the need for workers to maintain unity and cooperate with their respective unions, while encouraging continued engagement with the state government on matters relating to salaries, gratuities and other welfare concerns.

The NLC chairman maintained that constructive collaboration among workers, labour unions and the government would help address existing challenges and support efforts to improve industrial relations in the state.
