Academic activities have been disrupted at the Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Jalingo, following a protest by students over alleged attacks on their hostels.
The protest followed reports of rape and assault allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums who invaded the students’ hostels at night.
The students blocked the institution’s main entrance while carrying placards with inscriptions including, “The security of our lives matter” and “We are here to study, not to be killed.”
They called on security agencies to intensify patrols and take proactive measures to protect students living in the area.
The protesters also alleged that the attackers carted away their valuables, while appealing to the management of the institution and the Taraba State Government to intervene.
In September 2025, Governor Agbu Kefas had directed the state Commissioner of Police to deploy security operatives to the area after meeting with students who narrated their experiences and appealed for help over the security situation.
The students’ vulnerability is further heightened by the lack of accommodation within the institution, as both students and staff reside outside the school premises.
The students are therefore demanding urgent measures to address the security challenges and ensure their safety.
