Tayebwa Joins Kabaka at Masaza Cup Final as Kyaggwe Defeats Gomba

Watchdog Uganda about 4 hours 2 mins read

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa yesterday joined the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, at the 2026 Masaza Cup final, where Kyaggwe defeated Gomba 1-0 to lift the prestigious tournament trophy.

The final, held at Mutesa II Stadium, attracted the Kabaka and other dignitaries, alongside thousands of football enthusiasts who turned up to support the two competing counties.

Kyaggwe secured victory with a narrow 1-0 win over Gomba in a closely contested encounter, bringing the tournament to a conclusion amid celebrations from their supporters.

In a statement following the match, Tayebwa congratulated Kyaggwe on their victory, saying he enjoyed the quality of the game, the passion displayed by the players and the vibrant atmosphere created by supporters of both teams.

He noted that the Masaza Cup has grown beyond a football competition to become an important platform for promoting cultural identity, social cohesion and talent development across the Buganda Kingdom.

“The Masaza Cup has been instrumental in promoting cultural and social unity, as well as nurturing talent across the Buganda Kingdom,” Tayebwa said.

The Deputy Speaker also commended the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, and other Kingdom officials for their continued efforts in organising the annual competition.

He observed that the tournament continues to grow in stature, attracting increasing public interest while providing a platform for young footballers to showcase their abilities.

The Masaza Cup, one of Buganda’s flagship sporting events, brings together counties across the Kingdom in a competition that combines football, cultural pride and community participation.

Beyond the sporting contest, the annual tournament has become an avenue for strengthening unity among communities, engaging young people and identifying football talent that can progress to higher levels of the game.

Kyaggwe’s triumph over Gomba therefore marks the conclusion of another edition of the competition, which continues to occupy a significant place in Buganda’s sporting and cultural calendar.
