Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has taken on the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, over the state of electricity supply, demanding proof of his claim that some Nigerians asked him to slow down power because their freezers were freezing.
In a video she shared on her Instagram page, the actress said she had stayed away from national issues for most of the year but could no longer keep quiet about the blackouts. Her remarks went viral on Friday and drew thousands of comments from Nigerians.
Henshaw said power supply in her area comes on for only a few minutes before disappearing. “I need the names and numbers of these people that called you and said you should turn off the lights,” she said.
She added that the minister may not have raised tariffs, but the lack of electricity made his claim hard to believe. “You may not have increased tariffs, but there’s no light, so you’re lying,” she said.
The actress also said Nigerians now run their homes like mini power stations, relying on generators, inverters and solar panels. She questioned the huge sums said to have been invested in the power sector and asked what had been achieved. She also faulted the minister’s predecessor, Adebayo Adelabu, for repeatedly raising tariffs without fixing supply.
Tegbe made the freezer remark in September at the commissioning of a 3MW solar hybrid project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja. He said some consumers had asked him to slow down because their freezers were running continuously, a comment that opposition figures and commentators criticised.
Henshaw ended her message by saying God would judge those in government. “I am from Nigeria,” she said.
Many social media users backed her, with some saying they had gone several days without electricity. There has been no response yet from the Ministry of Power or Tegbe to her comments.
