‘They lied to Nigerians’ – Kenneth Okonkwo accuses Tinubu govt of secretly bringing back fuel subsidy

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

A Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is secretly returning fuel subsidy through its 30-day petrol price discount.

Speaking on Inside Source, a programme on Channels Television on Sunday, Okonkwo stated that the government was only avoiding the name while introducing a measure designed to reduce the cost of fuel for Nigerians.

The former Nollywood actor turned politician faulted the Federal Government’s claim that the recent cut in petrol price was just a discount and not a return to subsidy.

According to him, there is no real difference between subsidy and discount, as both are aimed at reducing what Nigerians pay for fuel.

“Sorry to say this, Taiwo Oyedele lied when he said it was not a subsidy. It was a subsidy,” Okonkwo declared.

He said the intervention came because of the high cost of petrol and the hardship it has caused families and businesses.

The ADC chieftain noted that the cut in pump price from about N1,500 to N1,350 per litre proves the government knows Nigerians need relief.

“What were they trying to do? They were trying to reduce costs. They acknowledged by themselves that the cost was becoming unbearable for the people and they had to intervene to give relief for the people,” he added.
