The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu, saying the president deserves to remain in office for a long time based on his performance.
Ladoja made the remarks on Monday during the flag-off ceremony for the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ijebu Road in Ogun State. President Tinubu was represented at the event by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Reacting to repeated references to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the ceremony, the monarch stressed that the occasion should not be treated as a political gathering. Instead, he said, the focus should be on appreciating the president for approving the important road project.
“I’ve been hearing everybody talking APC, APC. Bola Tinubu is not an APC man, no. Bola Tinubu is working and deserves to be president for a long, long time,” Ladoja said.
The former Oyo State governor also argued that Tinubu should be seen primarily as the president of Nigeria rather than as the leader of a political party.
“He deserves more than being an APC president. He’s not an APC president. He’s president of Nigeria,” he added.
Ladoja acknowledged that Tinubu’s performance could also work in the APC’s favour politically, but maintained that his support for the president’s continued leadership was based on his assessment of Tinubu’s record.
“The only thing I can look at is that his performance is likely to help the APC win elections. So, we are not discounting the performance of Mr President at all,” he said.
The monarch further declared that Tinubu deserved a long tenure, while noting that rival political parties would have to convince Nigerians of their relevance before the next election.
“We believe he deserves a long tenure, even though other parties are scrambling to say they are there when they are not visible,” Ladoja stated.
He ultimately left the decision in the hands of the electorate, particularly the people of Ibadan, saying their verdict would become clear when the next election arrives.
“We believe that by the time election comes, the people of Ibadan land will talk,” he said.
