“Tinubu Knows Price Of Fish, Garri, Bread” – Aide Insists President Knows Nigerians’ Hardship

Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement in the North-Central region, has maintained that the President is fully aware of the economic challenges facing Nigerians, including the rising cost of food and other essential commodities.

Essiet made this known while speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, dismissing suggestions that journalists are the only ones who understand the hardship citizens are going through.

According to her, the President receives regular updates on the situation across the country through community engagement activities and briefings from members of the Federal Executive Council.

She explained that those involved in community engagement regularly communicate the concerns of ordinary Nigerians directly to the President.

“I don’t feel it’s only media people who understand what the people are facing. Some of the realities our people are experiencing are what we communicate to Mr President,” she said.

Essiet also challenged the assumption that Tinubu is unaware of the rising prices of everyday items such as bread and eggs.

“I usually tell people, you think Mr President doesn’t know the price of egg or bread in the market? He does, because we brief him regularly, and so do members of the Federal Executive Council,” she stated.

Beyond the rising cost of living, the presidential aide spoke about infrastructure development, drawing attention to the planned reconstruction of the Mokwa-Bida road in Niger State.

She described the road as a longstanding concern for residents, noting that its poor condition has contributed to serious accidents involving motorists and heavy-duty vehicles.

According to Essiet, the road was last awarded for reconstruction 46 years ago, making its proposed rehabilitation a significant issue for the affected communities.

“The last time that road was given out on contract was 46 years ago. So tell me if that is not the wish of the people,” she said.

She added that Tinubu had directed that the reconstruction be carried out using reinforced concrete rather than conventional asphalt, with the aim of ensuring a more durable road.

“Mr President said they should award the contract and make sure that the contract will be reinforced concrete, not just asphalt,” she added.

Essiet’s comments come amid continued public concern over the rising cost of food and the broader cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria. Vice President Kashim Shettima had also recently expressed optimism that food prices would begin to ease in the coming weeks.

While the presidential aide insists that the administration is aware of the difficulties Nigerians face, the cost of essential goods remains a major concern for households across the country.
