Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure victory in Imo State in the 2027 general elections, arguing that opposition to the president in the Southeast should not be mistaken for hatred towards him.
Okorocha made this known during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, where he discussed Tinubu’s chances in the Southeast and the impact of his own emergence with a political ticket.
According to the former governor, the resentment previously directed at the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State was largely linked to the administration of former Governor Ikedi Ohakim and should not be interpreted as hostility towards Tinubu.
He maintained that the president has done nothing to warrant the resentment of the Igbo people, pointing to his longstanding relationships with people from the Southeast.
“President Tinubu has done no wrong to any Igbo man. His best friends in Lagos are Igbos,” Okorocha said.
He also argued that disagreements with state leaders should not automatically translate into opposition to the president at the federal level. Reflecting on his time as governor under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Okorocha claimed that the APC performed better in Imo State during that period than it has under Tinubu.
“Buhari’s time when I was governor was the worst period ever… But even at that, we made 25 per cent. As against when Tinubu came under Hope that we couldn’t make five per cent,” he stated, referring to the party’s electoral performance in the state.
Despite the challenges facing the APC in the Southeast, Okorocha believes the political situation could change ahead of the 2027 elections.
He expressed optimism that his emergence with a political ticket would strengthen the party’s chances in Imo State and help improve support for Tinubu.
“Let me tell you that, with my emergence now, this ticket, Tinubu will win in Imo State,” he declared.
