Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu would attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) slated for September this year.

According to him, the President would be sitting in the front row alongside President of the United States of America (US), Donald Trump and other world leaders.

The envoy, who spoke with newsmen on Wednesday evening after meeting with the President at the State House, Abuja said

Tinubu will be specifically speaking to the world body on his administration’s reforms and the imperativeness of border policing in West Africa to curtail terrorism in the sub region.

Asked the purpose of his visit to the seat of government, Ibrahim said “I came in from New York to speak with the president as chairman of the United Nations Budget Committee, and in preparation for UNGA

“So, the president, I can tell you, has generously agreed to attend the UNGA meeting of the United Nations. It’s significant because Mr. President has a speech to give to the whole world about his reform success in Nigeria, and that has been stated for for September. So Nigeria will be effectively in UNGA. There are side meetings, side event meetings for Mr. President to attend, which includes a generation of power, power issues that have to do with energy.

“You know, so there’s a side event meeting. There’s another side event meeting on education, as well as hospital management, which we put in place for Mr. President to attend. But we don’t want to crowd his itineraries, so we discuss that graciously. The President was able to give us his word. Now he will come to UNGA this September.

“That’s very amazing. The president also reflected his commitment to border policing, so this time around, the President will be working with the United Nations to look into the West Africa border.

“So the border is porous. So a lot of peacekeeping effort is coming in here. I can assure you, from what we discussed, the president is going to put a lot of efforts in border policing for West African countries, and I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but I can tell you that some things are coming for the good of Nigeria in the time of border policing, West Africa border policing, and he gave specific directive on what to do instantly, and I will be going back to the UN to also inform everyone about the concern to take West Africa as a case study of border policing and ensure that our security is well guaranteed. So border policing will be fine. These are the kind of things that the UN is established for.

“You know, as far as we are concerned, we look at that. West Africa border policing is very important, and President is very committed. This is very important. And so the entire four legacy projects of the president are interconnected, and all the geopolitical zones are involved.

“We have the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. We also have the second legacy project of Sokoto-Badagry. We have the third one that is the Trans-Sahara, and the fourth one that is Akwanga to Maiduguri.

“If we start with the first one, and that’s Lagos Calabar, 750 kilometres. We have Section 1, which is from a Victoria Island to a local village, 47.47 kilometres. Two carriageways, with 25-metre train track at the middle.

“That project is a beauty to behold. And that highway is named President Bola Tinubu Coastal Highway. And that’s what we have named the entire coastal highway.

“And then you come to Section 2, that is about 55 kilometres from that village. It goes to the border between Lagos and Ogun. That project is about 60 percent done, and we believe that by the end of November, we will have finished that project.

“But you will be seeing some bridges going on in Section 1. Those bridges are part of the procurement of Section 2. And so we have a span of 80 metres.

“The traditional span of bridges has been 15 metres. And so that is going on.

Sokoto-Badagry, 1,068 kilometres, with starting in Ilela in Sokoto State, 120 kilometres by two, 70 percent completed in spite of the security challenges. Work is ongoing, tree planting, solar light, and CCTV.

“And then you now move to Kebbi, 258 kilometres. That section is like, you know, 258. Layered upon existing state repression of civic space and press freedoms and a deteriorating security situation, the current state of affairs could not be more dire.
On May 8, 2026, journalist and SJS Human Rights Secretary Mohamed Bulbul was abducted, beaten, and threatened by Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and Mobile Vehicle Checkpoint Unit officers alongside two other journalists, Abdihafid Nor Barre and Abdishakur Mohamed Mahomud.
Prior to the raid, the journalists had received threats for their reporting on the planned opposition protests in Mogadishu. While in detention, Bulbul was interrogated about an article he co-authored on the case of Saadia Moalin Ali, a nursing graduate and rickshaw driver arrested and detained for her activism on social media. Following this initial interrogation, the men were transferred to the Banadir Regional Police Command and threatened with death if they continued to report on the planned opposition protests. The journalists were released just before midnight on the same day.
Despite being released, Mohamed Bulbul has continued to face repression and intimidation, ultimately forcing him to flee Somalia. The NISA officer who abducted Bulbul on May 8 has repeatedly sent Bulbul threatening messages via WhatsApp, including for allegedly "crossing a red line" for posting photos of the officer as part of Bulbul's reporting on the agency's repression of journalists and opposition figures.
Much of the harassment against Bulbul is linked to his journalism, his involvement with SJS, and his connection to SJS Secretary General Abdalle Mumin. Notably, Bulbul was previously arrested in August 2023 for publishing a report on allegations of corruption within the police and was beaten and held incommunicado by authorities before being released in October 2023.

Mohamed Ibrahim Osman (Bulbul) [left]; Abdihafid Nor Barre (centre) and Abdishakur Mohamed Mohamud (right). | PHOTO/SJS."Journalists in Somalia, including my colleagues, are increasingly facing intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and censorship as the country's political crisis deepens. These attacks are not only an assault on press freedom but also a serious setback for Somalia's democratic aspirations, peace, and stability," said SJS Secretary General Abdalle Mumin. "Silencing independent journalism undermines public trust, accountability, and informed civic participation at a time when the country most needs them. The Somali authorities must uphold their constitutional and international obligations to protect press freedom and ensure journalists can report without fear of reprisal. The international community must not remain silent in the face of these escalating violations."
Mohamed Bulbul's story reflects a growing level of press repression in Somalia. On June 1, 2026, authorities blocked and harassed journalists who were at the Banadir Regional Court to cover the trial of Sadia Moalin Ali and prevented them from using cameras or conducting interviews.
On June 23, 2026, authorities again blocked and harassed local media houses covering the trial. Most recently, on June 25, 2026, journalist Abdukadir Abukar Ali was abducted by armed Somali police officers from the Banadir Regional Court for reporting on Ali's trial.
Reporters covering security issues and recent protests have also been met with arrests and harassment. On June 26, armed police officers arrested Mohamed Ali Mohamud, also known as Qadaaye, in Mogadishu without a legal justification for covering the story of a police officer who complained that his salary had been cut by senior officers. Following his arrest, Qadaaye was taken to Kaaran Police Station and beaten, and authorities refused to let his family visit him in detention. Qadaaye was released on June 28 without charge, but continues to face threats. On May 25, journalist Abdirahman Jakataa was arrested for reporting on women who were allegedly robbed by security forces in Baidoa, south-west Somalia.
"One of the most fundamental elements of democracy is people's right to participate in their own governance through free speech and peaceful protest," said Ikechukwu Uzoma, Senior Staff Attorney for Africa at KHRC. "Repressing these rights, especially following the adoption of a new constitution, is an affront to people-centric leadership and is therefore condemnable."
SJS and KHRC urge Somali authorities to immediately cease their attacks on journalists and to uphold the freedoms of expression and assembly for all citizens, including members of the opposition.","Following the May 2026 passage of a new constitution to extend the office terms of the President and Parliament in Somalia, scheduled peaceful protests have been marred by state-sponsored violence.
