A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has predicted that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election, even if opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi decide to join forces.
Fayose, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, said the opposition would face an even greater challenge if Atiku and Obi contested separately, arguing that their votes would be divided.
“A three-way horse, maybe I am not putting it right. Atiku is there, Obi is there. Even if they come together, this man (Tinubu) will still defeat them. But let us say they don’t come together, too bad for them because this election will be balkanized,” he said.
The former governor also claimed that the South-West would produce a vote margin of not less than six million in Tinubu’s favour, questioning how either Atiku or Obi would secure a significant share of the votes from the President’s region.
Fayose said he had no issues with anyone but maintained that the opposition was aware that it would not make progress in the 2027 presidential election.
He further described Tinubu as the shortest route to power returning to the North, despite Atiku’s interest in the presidency.
“The reality today is this power is coming to the South, the South must do eight years. Let me equally tell you, Asiwaju is the shortest point to the North. If an Atiku comes in, he will be struggling to do eight years, if Obi comes in, he will want to say I will do eight years. May I say to you respectfully, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the shortest point to power going back to the North, any Northerner contesting now is just contesting.”
Fayose, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) board by Tinubu, also insisted that the President would secure at least 12 million votes to win the 2027 election.
“Unfortunately, you are not a politician. I am analysing based on my experience. You brought me to this place because you know that I knew a little about Nigeria. This politics is not a tea party. Asiwaju will have over two million votes, write it down – to rig election now is very, very difficult.”
Fayose attributed his prediction to what he described as improvements in the economy under Tinubu, saying the President had stabilised an economy that was in a critical situation after the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He also claimed that roads across Nigeria had improved under Tinubu’s administration, acknowledging that some people might disagree with his assessment.
