While constructive opposition remains indispensable to democracy, public debate must be anchored in economic facts, institutional realities and the genuine welfare of Nigerians rather than political interpretations designed to discredit every government intervention.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku Abubakar’s suggestion that the temporary discount represents a restoration of petrol subsidy is misleading. It confuses two different economic instruments: a government-funded subsidy and a commercial decision by a petroleum retailer to forgo its profit margin. That distinction is neither semantic nor trivial. It goes to the heart of Nigeria’s petroleum reforms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Commercial Discount Not Restoration of Petrol Subsidy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced that its retail subsidiary will temporarily forgo its petrol retail profit margin, allowing consumers to purchase fuel at cost for an initial 30-day period, with priority given to commercial transport operators.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Under the former subsidy regime, government resources absorbed the difference between the economic cost of petrol and the regulated selling price. Under the newly announced retail arrangement, NNPC proposes to surrender its commercial margin without receiving government reimbursement for the discount. One is a fiscal subsidy. The other is a reduction in commercial earnings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A supermarket offering temporary discounts does not thereby establish a national food subsidy. Neither does a petroleum retailer automatically restore fuel subsidies by reducing its profit margin.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nevertheless, NNPC should publish the financial details, including confirmation that no hidden reimbursement, below-cost sale or public financing arrangement is involved. Transparency will strengthen the government’s position far more effectively than political exchanges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The United States is Also Providing Temporary Fuel Relief\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku’s statement overlooks an important international reality: governments across the world are responding to exceptional energy-price pressures through temporary measures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On October 5, 2026, the United States introduced temporary relief permitting wider on-road use of red-dyed diesel while deferring federal excise-tax payments without penalties through the end of 2026. The intervention followed American diesel prices reaching approximately $6.50 per gallon.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The American arrangement is a tax-related intervention, whereas Nigeria’s announced NNPC discount concerns a retailer’s profit margin. They are not identical policies. However, both illustrate a recognised principle of economic management: temporary relief can accompany longer-term market reforms without necessarily abandoning those reforms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If the United States can respond pragmatically to extraordinary fuel-price pressures, why should Nigeria be accused of economic inconsistency for exploring temporary relief? Economic flexibility is not policy failure. It is often a necessary feature of responsible governance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Beyond 30 Days: Relief Must Continue While Transport Alternatives Expand\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The initial 30-day petrol discount should be regarded as the beginning of a carefully sequenced relief strategy, not the conclusion of government’s responsibility to cushion Nigerians against high transportation costs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The National Patriots therefore recommend that the federal government and NNPC review the intervention before its expiration and consider extending the discount, or introducing comparable relief measures, until CNG-powered vehicles, electric mobility and affordable mass-transit services become more widely accessible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such an extension must remain financially sustainable, transparent and subject to periodic review. Priority should be given to commercial transport operators, whose operating costs directly affect commuters, food distribution and household expenditure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>President Tinubu’s administration has an opportunity to demonstrate that economic reform and social protection are complementary responsibilities. Nigerians should not be left without practical relief while longer-term transportation alternatives are still being developed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Atiku’s Production-Based Subsidy: Attractive Language, Difficult Economics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku proposes what he describes as a transparent, production-based subsidy involving preferential crude-pricing arrangements for domestic refiners. The proposal deserves examination, but it is not the straightforward solution his statement suggests.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nigeria’s crude oil has an international market value. Supplying domestic refiners below that value creates an economic cost, even when the Treasury makes no direct cash payment. The difference represents revenue forgone by the crude supplier, which may ultimately affect government earnings, public investment or other national priorities. That is an implicit subsidy. Furthermore, cheaper crude does not automatically guarantee cheaper petrol.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Refiners incur financing, maintenance, processing, transportation and distribution costs. Without enforceable pass-through arrangements, part of the benefit could remain with intermediaries rather than reach consumers. A preferential crude-pricing system would also require credible answers concerning allocation, eligibility, auditing, pricing formulas, duration and the prevention of arbitrage.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Who qualifies for cheaper crude? At what discount? Who absorbs the revenue loss? How are the benefits transferred to motorists? What prevents diversion or preferential treatment? These are fundamental questions of public finance and market governance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Domestic refining deserves support through reliable crude supply, infrastructure, regulatory certainty and competitive market conditions. But subsidising refinery inputs through discounted national resources is not necessarily the most efficient or equitable method.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Forward crude sales, meanwhile, are financing and supply arrangements whose economic effects depend on their contractual terms. They cannot automatically be equated with discounted crude or government-funded petrol subsidies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku’s proposal is therefore not inherently impossible, but it remains insufficiently developed to establish that it would deliver nationwide affordability without substantial fiscal or market risks.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The 900-Outlet Argument Misses the Purpose of Targeted Relief\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Atiku Media Office questions whether NNPC’s retail network can provide nationwide benefits, citing more than 900 outlets and an alleged 52 per cent petrol-availability figure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Distribution and availability are legitimate concerns. However, a limited network does not automatically invalidate a targeted intervention.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The government has identified commercial transport operators as priority beneficiaries. This matters because transport costs affect commuters, traders, workers and the movement of agricultural produce.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If implemented effectively, relief directed towards transport operators could extend benefits beyond the motorists purchasing petrol directly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But the government must establish mechanisms to encourage these savings to reach passengers and consumers rather than remaining entirely with transport businesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NNPC should publish participating outlets, availability arrangements, applicable prices and monitoring procedures. The reported 52 per cent availability figure should also be independently verified and, if accurate, addressed through improved supply management. The National Patriots support accountability, not excuses for operational weaknesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Acknowledging Hardship Not Admission That Reform Was Unnecessary\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku’s statement cites remarks by presidential adviser Daniel Bwala acknowledging that the economic reforms contributed to increased poverty. Acknowledging the adverse effects of reform is not inherently contradictory. It is an important part of honest governance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nigeria’s petrol subsidy system had imposed substantial fiscal pressures, while foreign-exchange distortions complicated investment and economic planning. The question is not whether reform was necessary, but whether its sequencing, implementation and social protection have adequately shielded vulnerable citizens. On that question, government must remain accountable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The National Patriots have consistently maintained that macroeconomic improvement must translate into affordable food, transportation, electricity, employment and improved household purchasing power. No administration should confuse improving economic indicators with the immediate disappearance of hardship. Equally, the opposition should not confuse an acknowledgement of hardship with proof that every reform objective was misguided.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Obasanjo Comparison Requires Historical Accuracy\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku’s claim that Nigeria became Africa’s largest economy between 1999 and 2007 without subsidy removal or tax increases oversimplifies economic history.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nigeria’s widely reported emergence as Africa’s largest economy followed the 2014 GDP rebasing exercise, not a formal ranking achieved during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, petroleum prices were adjusted during the Obasanjo years, while the country’s tax and fiscal systems underwent significant changes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Economic comparisons must also account for exchange-rate movements, inflation, population growth, oil-market conditions and statistical methodology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A country’s position in an African GDP ranking, particularly when expressed in US dollars, does not by itself establish whether its citizens are becoming more prosperous.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The relevant measures include real incomes, productivity, poverty reduction, employment, infrastructure and living standards. Atiku served as Vice President for eight years and is entitled to defend that administration’s record. But historical claims must withstand the same scrutiny demanded of today’s government.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Political Competition Must Not Overshadow National Welfare\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The suggestion that every relief measure introduced ahead of 2027 is necessarily an electoral manoeuvre is an argument about political motivation, not proof of wrongdoing. An approaching election does not suspend the government’s obligation to respond to economic hardship. Nor does it prevent the opposition from questioning whether relief measures are adequate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What Nigerians deserve is a serious debate about which interventions are affordable, transparent, effective and sustainable. The National Patriots therefore call upon NNPC and the Federal Government to communicate the petrol-discount arrangement more comprehensively, publish its operational details and demonstrate how it complements the country’s evolving transportation and social-protection policies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>President Tinubu’s administration should be encouraged to respond to economic realities without abandoning fiscal discipline. At the same time, it must ensure that announced relief translates into measurable benefits.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku’s alternative proposals should be assessed on their financial implications and practical feasibility, not merely their political appeal.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Food for Thought\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A temporary intervention is not necessarily a failed policy, just as a permanent subsidy is not necessarily sustainable protection. The true measure of responsible leadership is the ability to recognise hardship, respond pragmatically, preserve national resources and build lasting alternatives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The National Patriots Position\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The National Patriots commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for NNPC Retail’s proposed margin reduction as a constructive short-term response to fuel-price pressures. We particularly welcome the emphasis on commercial transport operators, while urging government to widen access wherever operationally and financially feasible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We recommend extending the intervention where financially sustainable, ensuring continuity of appropriate relief until CNG, electric mobility and mass-transit alternatives become more widely accessible. Transparent implementation, public reporting and stronger targeted protection for vulnerable households must remain priorities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Above all, Nigerians must see the benefits in their daily expenditure. Opposition politics has a legitimate place in democracy, but criticism should distinguish genuine policy weaknesses from economic mischaracterisation. Nigeria needs sustainable solutions, not a return to arrangements whose costs are concealed or transferred to future generations. The objective must remain clear: immediate relief where possible, sustainable affordability through structural reform, and measurable improvement in the welfare of every It will be a transparent, accountable and verifiable system that guarantees Nigerians pay half the price of petrol.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement questioned the reported daily petrol consumption figures used by government officials, contrasting President Bola Tinubu’s September 2024 statement that consumption had fallen to around 30-something million litres daily following subsidy removal with Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele’s reported estimate of approximately 50 million litres daily in October 2026.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“How did Nigeria move from thirty-something million litres to 50 million litres? Where is the independently verifiable data supporting this figure?” it asked.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement argued that discrepancies in consumption figures required clarification, particularly where the volume of petrol reportedly consumed could influence the cost of public interventions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It called on the Federal Government to publish the data supporting its estimates, explain the methodology used to calculate daily consumption and allow independent verification.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group maintained that the previous subsidy regime was undermined by disputed consumption figures, difficult-to-verify claims and opaque financial arrangements involving government institutions and petroleum operators.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said Nigerians deserved to know how much public money was being spent on fuel interventions, the basis for the payments, who received the funds and the quantity of petrol actually delivered to consumers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obi proposes half-price petrol policy\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outlining its proposed alternative, the movement said an Obi administration would introduce a “Half Price Policy” under which Nigerians would pay half of an independently determined reference price for petrol.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the statement, the reference price would be published weekly by an independent panel using international benchmarks, freight costs and verified domestic costs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement said subsidy payments would be tied to actual, verified sales, with no refiner, depot operator or marketer receiving reimbursement for petrol that had not been sold to consumers through metered filling station pumps.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also proposed digital tracking to establish an auditable trail from refinery gates to filling stations and prevent inflated claims and fictitious consumption from qualifying for payment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On domestic refining, the movement said access to Nigerian crude oil for local refineries should operate under transparent and fair rules that do not favour a single company or privileged group.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It argued that competition and accountability should replace opaque arrangements in the petroleum industry.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed framework would also require legislative and budgetary approval by the National Assembly, alongside monthly public reports detailing the reference price, volumes sold, subsidy payments, beneficiaries, breaches, penalties, recoveries and independent audit findings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement said public funds should not be concealed in Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) accounts under unexplained labels such as under-recovery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Movement alleges subsidy continues under different names\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group further accused the APC-led government of continuing subsidy-like payments under different descriptions despite announcing the removal of petrol subsidy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It alleged that terms such as under-recovery and energy security costs had obscured the true extent of government support in the petroleum sector.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement also revisited the 2012 fuel subsidy removal controversy, claiming that the proposed petrol price of ₦145 per litre following the policy was opposed by Tinubu and other APC figures, who participated in protests against the measure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It accused the current administration of repeatedly increasing petrol prices without providing sufficient transparency about daily consumption, actual costs and public expenditure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp in the sector, the group proposed auditing energy security contracts, reducing crude production costs by tackling corruption and inflated security contracts, strengthening pipeline protection through implemented through a clear framework, including necessary legislative amendments, to establish a sustainable system rather than a temporary intervention that would expire after 30 refiners and importers could recover shortfalls later.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said the government should explain what was being paid, how the payments were accounted for and why the figures could not be independently verified.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Under Peter Obi, fuel subsidy will no longer be a black hole for public money.
