Todwong Urges Prison warders to Champion Household incomes

Watchdog Uganda about 4 hours 2 mins read

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has called on Uganda Prisons Service officers to leverage their leadership, professional expertise, and influence to drive household wealth creation.

Todwong delivered the message today to officers enrolled on command and leadership programs at the Uganda Prisons Academy and Training School, Luzira.

The participants included officers undertaking the Intermediate Command and Staff Course, Junior Command and Staff Course, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Course, and Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course.

He challenged the officers, in addition to their core mandates, to engage in income-generating endeavours like commercial agriculture and manufacturing to ensure community development.

“I encourage you to use your leadership to establish community challenges and work towards sustained solutìons,” Todwong challenged the Warders, urging them to become  “agents of socioeconomic transformation.”

Emphasising that poverty eradication begins at home, he urged them to actively support government wealth-creation initiatives, such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other empowerment programs.

Using financial management as a case study, Todwong cautioned against excessive spending on non-productive events and celebrations. He advocated for a culture of disciplined saving and strategic investment in income-generating enterprises, education, and agriculture.

He also stressed the vital link between peace, security, and economic progress, noting that a stable environment allows citizens to settle, conduct business, and improve their livelihoods. Reflecting on Uganda’s history, he encouraged officers to appreciate the nation’s transition from past instability to present security.

Addressing national unity, Todwong called on the officers to reject sectarianism and discrimination. He emphasised that Ugandans should be valued for their skills and contributions rather than their tribal or religious backgrounds, adding that the country’s diversity should serve as a source of strength to build social and economic cohesion.

Furthermore, Todwong identified corruption as a major barrier to national progress. He urged officers to uphold high standards of integrity, discipline, and public accountability so state institutions can effectively serve the public interest.

Todwong reminded the officers that their strategic standing in society carries a responsibility to lead by example. He urged them to cultivate strong public relations, make sound choices, and apply their experience to meaningfully improve the lives of the people they serve.
