Four officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, were reportedly killed in an ambush by suspected criminals in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
But the security outfit confirmed that only two of its personnel died in the attack.
The spokesperson of the Corps, Jimoh Adeniken, in a statement said the incident occurred while the officers were leaving their operational base along the Ago-Oyinbo farming area, around Ala Daadaa in Akure North.
According to him, the officers came under sudden attack by assailants who engaged them in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“Despite the bravery and resistance put up by the officers, one sustained fatal injuries and two unfortunately lost their lives,” Adeniken said. “They paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.”
He said reinforcements were immediately deployed to the area to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The Corps has also intensified patrols, security operations, and intelligence gathering in the affected area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
Adeniken added that the Ondo State Governor, the Corps Commander, and the Management commiserated with the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen officers.
“We salute their courage, sacrifice and commitment to the protection of the people of Ondo State,” it read.
The families of the deceased have also appreciated the Ondo State Government and Amotekun leadership for giving the late officers a befitting burial.
They appealed to the government to consider their relatives for future recruitment into the Corps.
Adeniken said the Amotekun Corps remains resolute and will not be deterred by the incident.
“In conjunction with other security agencies, we will continue to protect lives and property and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.
The Corps urged members of the public, particularly residents of farming communities in the area, to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies to aid in apprehending the attackers.
