Former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel, has named Manchester United’s new recruit, Youri Tielemans, as the best signing of the summer.
The Nigerian legend expressed his astonishment at how the Red Devils were able to secure the Belgian talent.
This summer has proven to be a fruitful transfer window for Manchester United. The club has recently welcomed Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow, bringing their total signings to three thus far, but it is Youri Tielemans who has particularly caught Mikel’s eye.
During an appearance on The Obi One podcast (as reported by Manchester Evening News), the ex-Blues midfielder declared the Belgian midfielder as the summer’s best signing.
“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans,” he asserted with conviction. “Honestly… how on earth did Manchester United sign him for £35 million? That is an absolute bargain. I observed him before and during the World Cup, and it is evident that he is a quality player.
“Naturally, we all recognize Tielemans’ versatility; he can operate as a six, an eight, or a ten, and having a player capable of playing in various positions allows for tactical flexibility. Tielemans embodies that versatility.”
Mikel further emphasized the attributes that distinguish Tielemans as an exceptional player, stating:
“He scores goals, poses a threat from set pieces, excels with the ball at his feet, and seldom loses possession. The only critique one might have is that he lacks pace, but his game intelligence is remarkable.
“He demonstrates great awareness both with and without the ball. When I assess all the midfielders who have moved to different clubs this summer, Tielemans stands out as the best,” the former Super Eagles captain remarked.
Youri Tielemans has yet to make his debut for Manchester United since joining the club this summer, owing to an injury sustained during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
