Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have intercepted three disassembled canoes reportedly procured by a suspected terrorist kingpin, Shehu Bagewaye, to facilitate the movement of his fighters across riverine areas in Zamfara State.
The operation, carried out on August 23, 2026, followed credible intelligence that the terrorist leader had arranged for the canoes to be procured from Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State and transported to Zamfara.
Media Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, disclosed this in a statement.
According to him, intelligence indicated that the canoes were intended to help the terrorists overcome river obstacles restricting their movement and enhance their mobility for criminal activities against vulnerable communities.
“Acting swiftly on the intelligence, troops of Sector 2 conducted a covert operation along identified areas of interest and successfully intercepted three disassembled canoes in transit to their intended destination,” Danja said.
He added that the individuals transporting the items abandoned them and fled after sighting the troops.
The recovered canoes are currently in the custody of the troops, while efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend those connected with the attempted movement.
Danja said the interception underscored the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations by Operation Fansan Yamma in disrupting terrorist logistics and denying criminal elements the resources needed to enhance their mobility and operational reach.
He said the Joint Task Force remained committed to identifying and dismantling terrorist networks, disrupting their logistics and restricting their freedom of movement before they could threaten communities.
The military also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security forces, stressing that such cooperation remained critical to disrupting terrorist activities and protecting lives and property across the Joint Operations Area.
