United States President Donald Trump has declared the commencement of the “most severe economic operation” against Iran.
This is as negotiations aimed at resolving the prolonged conflict between the two nations remain stalled.
In a message posted on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump stated that Iran had “failed to seize” the opportunity to negotiate a deal and would face “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
He further warned of sanctions against any nation that engages in business with Iran.
He said, “Any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — it all needs to stop now.”
“You know who you are. This will be an Economic D-DAY, and we require all of our Allies to unite with the United States of America to isolate and overcome the Iran threat,” he wrote.
This is not the first instance in which Trump has issued threats of economic sanctions against Iran.
His administration has conducted a pressure campaign against Iran since April under the initiative known as Operation Economic Fury, aimed at isolating Tehran and obstructing its revenue sources.
The US has already imposed extensive sanctions on Iran’s oil, shipping and financial sectors, with the goal of severing the revenue Tehran generates from energy exports.
Additionally, it has established a naval blockade on Iranian ports and targeted companies, brokers and tankers accused of facilitating Iran’s oil sales abroad.
