BIRNIN KEBBI — The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on the Federal and state governments to improve workers’ welfare by implementing a living wage and promoting decent work conditions across the country.
The call was made on Thursday at the Nigeria Workers’ Rights Summit in Birnin Kebbi by Comrade Nuhu Toro, who represented the National Chairman of the TUC.
Toro said Nigerian workers need concrete action rather than promises, stressing that a living wage remains essential to improving their standard of living.
He also urged governments at all levels to end the casualisation of labour, arguing that secure employment would enhance workers’ productivity and improve economic growth.
“Nigerian workers need action, not words. A living wage is the way forward for a just economy,” he said.
Declaring the summit open, Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, highlighted his administration’s achievements in agriculture, healthcare and infrastructure.
The governor said his administration had paid more than ₦16 billion in gratuities to retired civil servants as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
Idris also assured workers that his government was willing to review the state’s existing minimum wage and introduce additional policies aimed at improving their welfare and creating a greater sense of belonging.
The summit, held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi, was attended by the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Titus Amba; representatives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ); former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba; officials of the Trade Union Congress and other labour leaders, as well as government officials.
