Two Filipino sailors working for Saudi Arabia’s national shipping company, Bahri, have been killed in a security incident involving one of the company’s vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Bahri said the incident involved its vessel, SIDR, while it was travelling through the strategic waterway.
The company said the maritime security agency UKMTO reported on August 31 that a tanker had been struck by three unidentified projectiles while leaving the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has previously warned tankers against passing through the narrow waterway without authorisation.
“Bahri remains in continuous contact with the vessel and is coordinating closely with the relevant authorities and maritime industry stakeholders, while continuing to closely monitor developments,” the company said.
The latest incident comes about a month after another Bahri vessel was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. The Wedyan supertanker was sailing close to the coast of Oman when it was hit.
Two other Bahri vessels, AMZAN and MASA, were also attacked in the Red Sea after Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.
