OSOGBO — Two persons were reportedly killed in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, following a clash between police personnel and hoodlums allegedly attempting to take control of a motor park and the local government secretariat.
The incident occurred amid a warning by the state government on Sunday against attempts by individuals or groups to forcefully take over motor parks and local government secretariats, urging security agencies to remain vigilant and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Sources in Ikire said some hoodlums allegedly mobilised from the Oja-Ale area and moved towards Naira and Kobo, where they reportedly attempted to take over the motor park and the local government secretariat located along the expressway.
A shop owner, who pleaded anonymity, said the hoodlums allegedly attacked an individual on reaching the area, prompting residents to alert the police.
According to the source, police officers were subsequently deployed to the area.
“The hoodlums dared the police and disarmed one of the officers, which led the Divisional Police Officer to reinforce his men at Naira and Kobo.
“On getting there, the hoodlums and the police engaged in an exchange of gunfire, and we ran for safety.
“Later, we discovered that two persons were hit by bullets around the expressway. We also heard that the police recovered the weapon seized by the hoodlums,” the source said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Commissioner of Police was in Ikire conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, was also with the commissioner during the assessment.
When contacted, Ojelabi said he would brief journalists after the completion of the assessment tour.
