UCL: Man United defender, Martinez names who to blame for 2-0 defeat to Atletico, poor results

Daily Post 21 minutes 2 mins read

Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martinez has publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy for failing to sign more quality players during the summer transfer window.

This followed Manchester United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Manchester United started the match poorly, as Pablo Barrios scored for Atletico within the opening minute. The Red Devils subsequently attempted to recover by creating goal-scoring opportunities but were unable to convert their chances.

The situation deteriorated further when Leny Yoro received a straight red card for denying Jonathan David a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Ademola Lookman subsequently extended Atletico’s lead as the match ended in a 2-0 victory for the home side against the Premier League club.

After the match, Martinez expressed his dissatisfaction with the club’s executive team during an interview with Prime Video Sport, saying the club had failed to sign more players during the summer transfer window, leaving the squad short of depth.

He stated: “Yes. Honestly, I expected more. 100%. I expected more from our technical director; I have to be honest. As players, we have to do more, but it’s important to have a strong squad.

“I don’t think so. He (Carrick) did his best. Every season is different. You can’t say what you did last season. The team knows how we play. And if you don’t change next season, it’s a big problem.

“You can’t keep changing, changing, changing managers. But what about other areas? I can’t say more. It’s easy to blame the coach and the players, but we also have to talk about others, eh?”
