UCL: Yaya Toure becomes first African coach to qualify team for league phase

Slovakia Bratislava head coach, Yaya Touré has become the first African to qualify a team for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

This follows their 2-1 win over Celje in extra time of the play-off tie on Wednesday night.

The result meant that Slovan won the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

They will now be among the 36 teams in Thursday’s draw.

Touré was appointed in July on a three-year contract, and this is his first managerial job.

Nigeria’s Ndubuisi Egbo had already made history in 2020 when he became the first African to manage a club in the Champions League with KF Tirana.

However, Egbo’s team did not make it into the league phase.
