Ugandan Comedian Kapere Dies in Buddo

Watchdog Uganda about 4 hours 3 mins read

KAMPALA – Popular Ugandan comedian Yokana Mbuuse, widely known by his stage name Kapere Lufotose, has died. He passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2026, at a medical facility in Buddo, Wakiso District.

News of his death first emerged on social media before local media outlets, including reports citing entertainment journalist Kasuku, confirmed the tragic development. At the time of reporting, the exact cause of death remained undisclosed, although preliminary accounts indicated that he had passed away suddenly. Funeral arrangements and an official statement from his family are expected in due course.

Kapere rose to national prominence as a key figure in Uganda’s comedy industry, notably performing alongside the celebrated Amarula Family group, which also featured comedians Amooti Omubalanguzi (Allan Mujuni) and Messe Bontwe. Known for his self-deprecating humour and distinctive stage presence, Kapere openly embraced his unique physical appearance to build an identity in the entertainment industry. He once told reporters that accepting his natural features was central to his performance style and connection with audiences.

Beyond stand-up comedy, Kapere featured in several high-profile music videos, most notably appearing as a wealthy tycoon in former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine’s, hit song Mr. Money.

News of his death was also confirmed by Kyagulanyi in a social media post in which he expressed grief over the loss of his friend and comrade.

“A few moments back, I just received the most devastating news regarding the untimely passing of our brother, dear friend and comrade Yokana Mbuuse, fondly called Kapere Lufotose,” Kyagulanyi wrote.

He described the deceased as a man who brought happiness during difficult moments and remained passionate about his country.

“A man who made every dark moment light. A man who loved his country and wished it well! A loss so difficult to take in,” he added.

Behind the laughter, Kapere’s life was marked by perseverance. A father of three, he frequently spoke candidly about his difficult childhood, having lost his mother as an infant and suffered from a severe childhood hernia condition that delayed his early education until well-wishers intervened.

In recent years, Kapere had also become an outspoken advocate on the economic challenges facing Ugandan entertainers. He repeatedly highlighted financial instability in the local comedy industry, citing limited booking opportunities and the marginalisation of comedians.

In interviews earlier this year, he openly expressed frustration with some show organisers and reflected on the difficulties artists face in sustaining themselves financially after their popularity begins to fade.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, fellow entertainers and public figures, celebrating his resilience, candidness and the laughter he brought to audiences across the country.

Further details regarding his death and burial arrangements are expected to emerge as the family communicates its plans.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
