UMSC Signs Cooperation Agreement With Russian Muslim Leadership in Moscow

Watchdog Uganda about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), represented by Mufti His Eminence Dr Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Russia to strengthen relations between Muslim institutions in Uganda and the Russian Federation.

The agreement was signed in Moscow on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, by Sheikh Mubaje and His Eminence Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, chairman of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Russia. Similar cooperation agreements were signed with other African Muslim councils and organisations represented at the conference by Muslim leaders, including Muftis from Tanzania, Chad and Mauritania. The agreements mark a step towards strengthening institutional relations between Russian Muslim institutions and African Muslim religious bodies, including the UMSC.

The signing took place during a three-day international conference held under the theme, “The Role of Religious Organisations in Strengthening Spiritual Ties Between Russia and Africa.” The conference brought together religious leaders to discuss ways of deepening spiritual and social relations between the two regions.

The discussions highlighted the role of religious institutions in promoting dialogue, shared moral values and cooperation across geographical and cultural boundaries.

Sheikh Mubaje’s participation also reflects the UMSC’s broader engagement in interfaith dialogue and religious cooperation. In addition to serving as Uganda’s Mufti, he chairs the African Forum for Muslim Councils, co-chairs the African Councils of Religious Leaders for Peace and serves as president of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU).

The cooperation agreement is expected to provide opportunities for the UMSC to exchange experiences with Russian and African religious institutions, strengthen institutional partnerships and promote peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and service to humanity.

It also offers a platform for Uganda’s Muslim community to share its experiences in interfaith cooperation while learning from religious communities in Russia and other African countries.

The conference was scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
