ENTEBBE | Unconfirmed reports circulating on Tuesday claim President Yoweri Museveni endorsed his son, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, during a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) at State House Entebbe.
The claim originates from Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda, who is Executive Secretary in the Office of the National Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
“President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has endorsed General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni at the Central Executive Committee meeting held at Entebbe State House this afternoon,” Kabanda posted on X.
The post was quickly picked up by several local blogs, including Pulse Uganda and The Pearl Times, which reported it as a claim by Kabanda, noting he gave no details on the nature or scope of the alleged endorsement.
As of Tuesday evening, there was no official confirmation from State House or the NRM Secretariat. Watchdog Uganda has not independently verified the claim.
The reports come against a backdrop of sustained mobilisation by the PLU. In recent months, the pressure group has held signature collection drives, public barazas and processions positioning Gen. Muhoozi as a potential successor. In September, Kabanda told a PLU press conference that Gen. Muhoozi intends to contest in 2031 and that President Museveni had promised to support him — a claim that also lacked official confirmation at the time.
There is also no verified information that Gen. Muhoozi has been appointed a member of the NRM CEC. Published lists of the current CEC do not include him. The circulating claim centres on an alleged verbal endorsement at the meeting, not a formal appointment to the party organ.
As a serving military officer, Gen. Muhoozi remains subject to the UPDF Act, which bars serving officers from engaging in partisan politics or contesting for political office.
State House and the NRM Secretariat are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
