The management of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has announced the indefinite closure of its Ifetedo Campus following the death of a 400-level student of Criminology and Security Studies, Miss Grace Osunlakin.
The university disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji.
In the statement, the university described the incident as a tragic loss that had deeply affected the institution and its community.
According to the statement, “Osunlakin reportedly died on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, prompting the university authorities to review the situation and take immediate measures aimed at maintaining calm on the campus.”
The management expressed profound sadness over the student’s demise and extended condolences to her family, fellow students and all stakeholders impacted by the incident.
“The University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the student community, and all stakeholders affected by this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
It explained that the decision to close the campus indefinitely followed careful consideration of the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the need to allow emotions among students to subside.
The university stated that the temporary closure would also provide an opportunity for a comprehensive assessment of healthcare facilities, medical personnel and water supply systems within the Ifetedo Campus.
According to the management, “the review forms part of broader efforts to address longstanding challenges associated with the campus and improve conditions for students and staff”.
The statement noted that the institution remained committed to ensuring the safety, welfare and well-being of members of the university community.
The university assured the public that a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident would be conducted, while appropriate measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence.
“May Almighty God grant the family of the deceased, the students, and the entire University community the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.
The management appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with the institution as efforts continue to address the issues identified and restore normal academic activities at the campus.
