The United States has launched fresh airstrikes on targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, the US Central Command, CENTCOM, has confirmed.
CENTCOM said the strikes began at 12 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, following recent attacks and attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members deployed in the region.
“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran. The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The strikes came after US President Donald Trump vowed that Washington would respond forcefully to attacks on US bases in Jordan over the weekend.
Iran has attacked eight commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since its blockade of ships sailing to and from Iranian ports resumed on July 14, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, UKMTO, which monitors maritime security incidents in the region.
Four of the reported attacks have occurred since last Monday.
Iran has remained defiant, warning that it would prevent oil exports from the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island, located on the northern side of the Strait of Hormuz.
Nour News, a state-linked news agency, also reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, a major port city, and Chabahar on Iran’s southern coast.
