She obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree and later earned a Master of Laws degree in International Law from the University of Houston Bates Law School, Houston, Texas, USA.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her professional journey, however, went far beyond the legal profession.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adefala built an impressive career across manufacturing, transportation, power, telecommunications, financial services and corporate governance. Her ability to operate effectively across different sectors made her one of the notable Nigerian professionals whose careers demonstrated the value of combining legal knowledge with business leadership and strategic management.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She spent 16 years with the Michelin Group, one of the world’s leading tyre and mobility companies, where she worked in several departments, including the legal department at the company’s headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her time at Michelin provided her with extensive international exposure and a deep understanding of manufacturing, government relations, private-sector advocacy and corporate affairs. She eventually rose to become Executive Director of Michelin Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In that capacity, she was deeply involved in government relations and the broader business environment affecting manufacturers. Her professional responsibilities exposed her to private-sector advocacy and lobbying in France, Washington and the headquarters of the European Union in Brussels. This international experience helped shape the corporate leader she later became and gave her a broad perspective on the relationship between government policy, business development and economic growth.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adefala was also a founding partner of Whitgift Law, a Lagos-based law firm involved in traditional and emerging areas of legal practice, particularly commercial and corporate law.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, in 2008, she took a leave of absence from the law firm after accepting the opportunity to become the Nigeria Country President and Chief Executive Officer of Alstom Group, the French multinational known for its work in power generation and high-speed rail transportation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She held the Alstom leadership position for seven years. Her tenure at Alstom further broadened her experience in the power sector and gave her significant knowledge of rail transportation, an area of growing importance to Nigeria’s infrastructure development.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Following her voluntary exit from Alstom, she returned to Whitgift Law in January 2016 as Managing Partner. It was a return that demonstrated the breadth of her professional identity. She was at once a lawyer, business executive, corporate strategist, governance expert and boardroom leader.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her expertise and reputation subsequently earned her appointments to the boards of several reputable organisations. She served as an independent non-executive director of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, following the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria for her appointment. Her boardroom responsibilities also extended to organisations including Coronation Registrars Limited, Interswitch Holdings Limited in the United Kingdom and other major institutions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She served as a non-executive director of Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited, the Nigerian operation of the Italian oil and gas engineering company, from 2016 to 2019.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She also served on the board of Societe Francaise Orange Middle East and Africa, associated with the French telecommunications giant Orange.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her association with Orange provided another illustration of her capacity to operate at the intersection of international business and the Nigerian market.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In one notable engagement, Adefala led a delegation of Orange Middle East and Africa to the Nigerian Communications Commission in Abuja to discuss the company’s interest in the Nigerian telecommunications market.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During the meeting with the then Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, she spoke of Orange’s interest in Nigeria and the company’s desire to support broadband development, digital economy initiatives and local content.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She described Nigeria’s huge population, economic potential, geographical proximity to Orange’s African operations and operating environment as important considerations for the group’s expansion plans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The engagement reflected another dimension of her professional contribution: her ability to represent international business interests while understanding the peculiarities and opportunities of the Nigerian environment. Adefala was also a long-standing member of the French-Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, reflecting her sustained interest in strengthening economic and commercial relations between Nigeria and France.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her professional affiliations included the International Bar Association, Nigerian Bar Association and Institute of Directors, Nigeria. Beyond the formal positions she held, Adefala was recognised as a keen student of leadership, governance and continuous education.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She attended executive leadership and governance programmes at some of the world’s leading business schools and universities, including Columbia University Graduate School of Business in New York, Stanford University Graduate School of Business in California, INSEAD Business School in France, Harvard Business School, IESE Business School in Barcelona and London Business School.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This commitment to continuous learning was consistent with the philosophy that defined much of her professional life: that leadership requires constant intellectual renewal.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her career was also remarkable because it traversed sectors that are critical to Nigeria’s economic development. From manufacturing at Michelin to power and rail transportation at Alstom, from corporate law at Whitgift Law to financial services and corporate governance, and from telecommunications through her Orange responsibilities to business advocacy, Adefala acquired a depth and diversity of experience that few professionals attain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She brought the discipline of a lawyer into the boardroom, the commercial understanding of a corporate executive into legal practice and an international outlook into Nigerian business. Her professional story was consequently one of versatility.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But perhaps one of the most enduring aspects of her legacy will be the example she provided to younger professionals, particularly women seeking leadership positions in sectors traditionally dominated by men. She demonstrated that professional advancement need not be confined to a single discipline. A lawyer could become a manufacturing executive; a corporate executive could lead an international power and rail company; and an experienced business leader could return to legal practice and contribute meaningfully to corporate governance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Adefala’s career was, in many respects, a bridge between professions, industries and institutions. She was also associated with the Reagan Old Girls Association, serving as a trustee, another indication of her continuing connection to institutions and communities beyond her corporate responsibilities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The news of her death on September 2, 2026, has therefore created a profound void among those who knew and worked with her.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Corporate Nigeria has lost a gem.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The word “gem” is often used loosely, but in Adefala’s case it captures the combination of rarity and value that characterised her professional journey. She was a lawyer who understood business, a business executive who understood governance, an international corporate leader who understood Nigeria and a boardroom professional who valued continuous learning.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Her legacy is preserved not merely in the titles she held, but in the institutions she served, the businesses she helped represent, the boards on which she contributed, the professional relationships she built and the generations of professionals who encountered her example.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At a time when Nigeria continues to search for stronger institutions, ethical corporate leadership and professionals capable of connecting local realities with global standards, the contribution of people such as Victoria Adefala deserves to be remembered. Her life demonstrated that excellence can be built through discipline, education, versatility and service.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As family, friends, colleagues and associates mourn her departure, they can also reflect on a professional life that crossed several important chapters of Nigeria’s corporate development.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>From Michelin to Alstom, from Whitgift Law to the boardrooms of leading Nigerian and international companies, Victoria Adefala left her mark.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She may no longer be physically present in the boardrooms where she once contributed her experience and wisdom, but the institutions she served and the professionals who encountered her work will remain part of her enduring legacy. With the 2027 general","\u003Cdiv style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" >\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Laleye Dipo\u003C\u002Fstrong> writes on the gathering political storm against Governor Mohammed Bago and the ruling All Progressives Congress, a development that has made the party jittery.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the 2027 general elections around the corner, the political atmosphere in Niger state too has started gathering momentum with defeated aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some former cabinet members of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago defecting to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also, some members of the party who did not secure tickets to return to the house of assembly for another term as legislators in 2027 are reportedly grouping preparatory to their jumping ship and teaming up with opposition parties. The legislators have already formed a group known as the Group of 15.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a result, the once styled one party state has changed appellation with the creation of two major opposition political parties active for now. The plan of the defectors is to unseat Governor Bago.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to investigations, majority of these politicians are from the Niger South Senatorial zone ( Zone A), a district that controls a large chunk of votes and from where Governor Bago contested and won the governorship of the state in 2023 after representing Zone B (Niger East) for three terms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Investigations, however, revealed that the opposition to the realization of the second term dream of Governor Bago is secretly being backed by political heavy weights from within and outside the state with some of them even very prominent in the ruling APC.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The grouse of all these politicians, it was learnt, was their allegedly being shortchanged by the APC during the conduct of the party primary election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of the aggrieved politicians and former Senator Mohammed Bima said “no primary election was held in the state last May” as claimed by the party adding that Governor Bago “unilaterally handpicked the candidates of the APC for the 2027 elections”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>His position was corroborated by the incumbent Senator representing Niger South senatorial zone in the National Assembly who incidentally defeated Bima in the 2023 race, Mr Peter Nda Alikali.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Alikali, erstwhile member of the PDP on which platform he won election defected to the APC, one, to get the ticket of his new party and secondly to win a return ticket to the Senate. His ambition has however fallen flat as he lost the APC ticket to son of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr Mohammed Sani Kutigi. Alikali seems to have also lost out in the new arrangement because the senatorial ticket of his new group has now been given to Alhaji Ndarani.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The new group at a well attended gathering held recently at the State PDP Secretariat endorsed a former boss of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Alhaji Mohammed Mamman Nami as it’s governorship candidate after the man who won the ticket earlier, Abubakar Sulaiman stepped down for him. The PDP confirmed the replacement of Abubakar by Nami.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a statement, the party said “ The People’s Democratic Party, Niger State Chapter has affirmed the nomination of the former chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Alhaji Mohammed Mamman Nami as it’s candidate for the 2027 Niger state governorship election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The affirmation followed a meeting of the state executive committee, outgoing Governorship candidate, Abubakar Sulaiman Nyannamuwo and local government party Chairmen, convened to formally affirm the party’s candidates for the forthcoming general elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sulaiman also personally confirmed stepping down for Mani stating that his decision was taken in the “interest of the party, it’s unity and the overall progress of Niger state”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Namis name did not appear on the INEC portal when the names of governorship candidates for various political parties in the state were unveiled recently. The name of Sulaiman Abubakar remained on the portal as the PDP standard-bearer\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Despite this, Nami is now the talk of the town and the major issue in the political calculation of the state as far as the governorship contest in 2027 is concerned. He is seen as the man that can wrestle political power from the Farmer Governor as the APC candidate is called.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nami group is rumoured to belong to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The ADC group is also fighting Bago and the APC from another front.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The party has a former Director in the Federal Ministry of Works, Alhaji Kpautagi as it’s candidate. Kpautagi like Nami and Bago are from the Niger South senatorial zone though has the backing of some political bigwigs in the state from the Niger East senatorial zone and the Niger North Senatorial district.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Kpautagi has already picked a former Commissioner in the administration of Governor Bago, Alhaji Mamman Musa as his running mate a decision that has not gone down well with a group within the ADC. The group opposing Musa prefers a Muslim\u002F Christian ticket unlike the present Muslim \u002FMuslim ticket arrangement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This may be an albatross for the ADC and an advantage for Governor Bago because  Musa is from the Niger East senatorial zone which boasts of a huge christian population even though Bago himself and the APC parade a similar arrangement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One interesting aspect of the entire scenario is that 15 “defeated” House of Assembly members including the House Deputy Speaker, Hon Afinniki Dauda have joined the battle against Governor Bago though the House leadership has quickly denied any plan by the members to defect to the PDP or ADC.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaker Sarkindaji said the entire membership of the house are APC and fully supports the presidential aspiration of President Bola Tinubu and second term bid of Governor Bago.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Spokesman of the APC in the state, Musa Sarkinkaji, dismissed claims that the party is jittery as a result of the realignments of former members of the party to the PDP and the ADC.
