Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong believes the onus rests on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prove that the omission of some names from the candidates’ list for the 2027 elections is not partisan.
Effiong spoke on Monday when he was featured on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, days after the electoral umpire released the final list of candidates for the governorship election of 2027, with some persons’ names omitted.
“If INEC does not act in a manner that is neutral, it will make nonsense of whatever effort they think they are undertaking to give effect to the judgment,” the lawyer said on the show.
The Supreme Court in September ruled that Section 77(5) of the Electoral Act mandates that only those names appear on a political party’s membership register submitted to the electoral umpire at least 21 days before a primary, congress or convention can participate in the exercise.
