The inmates, in a video shared on Saturday by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, were seen celebrating and thanking the President for facilitating the agreement, which will enable eligible prisoners to serve the remainder of their jail terms in Nigeria.
Sharing the video on her X handle, Ojukwu wrote, “Thank you, Mr President!
“Nigeria immates in AbaSamuel Prisons, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia express their joy and Appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the successful conclusion of the bilateral Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.”
The Prisoner Transfer Agreement, signed this week by officials of both countries, will allow convicted citizens of Nigeria and Ethiopia to be transferred to their home countries to complete their prison sentences, subject to applicable laws and agreed conditions.
The Federal Government had disclosed that more than 100 Nigerians are currently serving various prison terms in Ethiopia and are expected to benefit from the arrangement.
The agreement was facilitated by the Federal Government through Ambassador Ojukwu and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), as part of efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians serving sentences abroad.
