Barely two weeks after an earlier meeting between political leaders loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, both camps have held another round of talks aimed at consolidating ongoing reconciliation efforts in the state.
Wike led a delegation comprising mainly members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including its Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, and the 23 local government council chairmen, to meet with Governor Fubara and his supporters at the governor’s private residence in Port Harcourt.
Also part of the delegation was the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda.
The latest meeting represents another attempt by the political leaders to build on previous engagements and strengthen efforts to resolve the protracted political crisis that has polarised Rivers State and strained relations between Governor Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly.
However, the extent to which the latest meeting will translate into a lasting resolution remains to be seen, amid concerns over the perceived dominance of Wike’s camp in the leadership of the local government councils and the selection of candidates for the 2027 elections, with members of Fubara’s camp seemingly left out of the political arrangements.
