Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded the victorious Edo Queens with ₦50 million following their triumph in the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday while presenting the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League trophies to the team at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.
Edo Queens defeated Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies 4-1 on penalties after regulation time ended 2-2 to emerge champions.
The governor commended the players for their resilience, determination and doggedness throughout the competition, describing the victory as significant to Edo State and Nigeria.
Okpebholo said he became confident of victory during the penalty shootout after observing the composure and strategy of the team’s goalkeeper, particularly her movements and efforts to distract the Ghanaian penalty takers.
He also praised the goalkeeper’s crucial saves and commended the coach, technical crew and other officials for their contributions to the team’s success.
“For me, this cup matters to Edo people and it matters to the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials. I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million,” he said.
The governor also commended the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) for televising the final live, saying the coverage enabled more Nigerians to watch and celebrate the team’s achievement.
Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, said the team had done the state proud by winning both the NWFL and WAFU-B titles in the same season.
Enabulele attributed the feat to grit, unity, discipline and resilience, while commending the new management, coaches and technical crew for raising the team’s standards.
Also speaking, Chairman of Bendel Insurance Football Club, Jarrett Tenebe, described Edo Queens as warriors, saying they could conquer Africa sooner than expected with the motivation being provided by the governor.
Tenebe also said meaningful youth engagement could address 85 per cent of security challenges in the state, adding that the governor’s increased focus on youth development would help curb crime and criminality.
