Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says his administration has broken what he described as a long-standing cycle of political promises to the people of Bonny by delivering and commissioning a major project in the island community.
Governor Fubara stated this on Friday at the commissioning of the rehabilitated Bonny National Grammar School in Bonny Local Government Area as part of the state government’s two-week commissioning of projects across Rivers State.
The governor said politicians had, over the years, visited Bonny during election campaigns to make promises to the people but stressed that his administration has gone beyond promises by returning to commission a completed project.
He described the development as significant, adding that it is the first time in more than 20 years that a government has come to Bonny to commission a project.
Governor Fubara said the rehabilitation of the school is particularly important because of its historical and educational significance to Bonny, recalling that the institution was established in 1965 through a community initiative.
The governor said the project was not merely about rehabilitating infrastructure but about reaffirming the place of Bonny in the development agenda of Rivers State.
He noted that with major oil and gas companies, including Nigeria LNG, operating in Bonny, education remains critical to ensuring that indigenes can take advantage of the economic opportunities created by the island’s strategic position in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Governor Fubara also announced scholarships for students who represented the state and excelled at a presidential debate, directing the Ministry of Education to develop modalities for providing them with full educational support.
He commended the people of Bonny, including traditional rulers, elders, women, youths and cultural groups, for their support and hospitality.
According to the governor, the commissioning is a source of personal fulfilment, stressing that his administration has demonstrated that projects once considered impossible could be delivered through commitment and determination.
He expressed confidence that the commissioning would mark the beginning of more development projects in Bonny and assured the people that the government will continue to give attention to the island community.
