We will build a Nigeria where teachers are respected – Labour Party

By John Alechenu, Abuja

The Labour Party, LP, has promised to build a Nigeria where teachers are respected, adequately rewarded and equipped to shape the nation’s future.

The party said it will replicate the Abia State model nationwide if voted in 2027.

In a World Teachers’ Day message on Monday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the LP described teachers as the bastion of the nation’s knowledge.

The party expressed regret over the current condition of teachers despite their critical role in moulding future leaders.

It assured teachers of support in their demand for better learning conditions for pupils and improved working conditions for themselves.

“Given our shared history through the Labour Movement to the birth of the Labour Party, the Party enjoins Nigerian teachers not to waver in their faith in the Labour Party as the pathway to improved welfare and better conditions of service,” the statement said.

The LP urged teachers to stand by its candidates in the 2027 elections, saying it remains best placed to advance their interests.

Asogwa added, “With what is today happening in Abia State, where Gov. Alex Otti has fulfilled the campaign promises he made to teachers in the state, the Labour Party makes bold to remind Nigerian teachers that the same feat will be replicated across all states of the federation when our candidates are voted into elective offices nationwide.”

The party called on government to declare a state of emergency in the teaching sector, warning that no nation can grow when those entrusted with grooming future generations are ill-equipped and poorly motivated.

It stressed the need to prioritise training and retraining of teachers while improving learning environments for children.

“When it is said that a teacher’s reward is in heaven, it does not suggest that teachers should be starved to death. It simply means that there is a special place reserved for them in the afterlife because of their enormous contributions,” the LP added
