We’re deeply touched – Gov Fubara laments building collapse as victims remain trapped

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has expressed sadness over the building collapse incident that claimed several lives on Peter Odili Road, Port Harcourt.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday morning, the governor, who disclosed that he visited the scene on Thursday, said the incident was avoidable, describing the ugly development as unfortunate.

“We are deeply touched by the loss of human lives, as such misfortune should not have occured in modern times when professional standards and safety measures are expected to guide construction activities.

“However, I commiserate with the families of the deceased and sympathise with those injured. I believe that the government will keep doing its best to mitigate future occurrences”, he said.

The governor also noted that during his visit, he “ordered the immediate closure of the site pending proper investigations”.

DAILY POST reports that despite the rescue operation on the site, many persons are still trapped in the rubble.

The rescue operation, which started early hours of Thunder lasted until about 6 p.m. with no success recorded.

The rescue workers subsequently suspended activities for the day to continue on Friday.
