WhatsApp has outlined the Android phones that can continue using its messaging platform, meaning phones that do not meet the requirements may eventually lose access to the app.
According to WhatsApp, the messaging platform currently supports Android phones running Android 6.0 and newer.
The device must also be capable of receiving SMS messages or phone calls, which is required for the WhatsApp account verification process.
Android phones that cannot use WhatsApp
Android devices running operating systems older than Android 6.0 are not supported by WhatsApp.
The platform regularly ends support for older operating systems as part of efforts to keep up with advances in technology and security.
WhatsApp said retiring support for older operating systems allows it to focus on newer systems and maintain the security and functionality of the app.
The company noted that users whose devices or operating systems are no longer supported will be notified.
WhatsApp will also remind affected users several times to upgrade their devices so they can continue using the messaging service.
The company said it will continue updating its information as support requirements change.
For Android users, checking the phone’s operating system version can therefore help determine whether the device meets WhatsApp’s current requirements.
